The Newsroom
TV be it US or UK TV is generally a pretty bland affair cookie cutter series which fit advertising demographics which are generally speaking lost and done by episode 4. Occasionally there are however a few gem’s which slip though the net. The Newsroom is on of those.
Written by the same bloke who wrote the West Wing and the Facebook movie from af ew years back the show now at episode 4 is about dialog, politics and long speeches something the writer is very good at. this is best described by the opening sequence of the first epised where the key player the News Anchor is stuck between two people providing bland replies in a political panel. Then the question what makes america great comes up.. and after Freedom and Opportunity this guy lights up..
We sure used to be. We stood up for what was right! We fought for moral reasons, we passed and struck down laws for moral reasons. We waged wars on poverty, not poor people. We sacrificed, we cared about our neighbors, we put our money where our mouths were, and we never beat our chest. We built great big things, made ungodly technological advances, explored the universe, cured diseases, and cultivated the world’s greatest artists and the world’s greatest economy. We reached for the stars, and we acted like men. We aspired to intelligence; we didn’t belittle it; it didn’t make us feel inferior. We didn’t identify ourselves by who we voted for in the last election, and we didn’t scare so easy. And we were able to be all these things and do all these things because we were informed. By great men, men who were revered. The first step in solving any problem is recognizing there is one—America is not the greatest country in the world anymore.
This is the sort of TV which I like, questioning the system, and that has been the show so far and the concept of news not being directed by advertising, politics and being there to inform and provide both sides of the opinion.
This is a good show, and i’m interested to see if the ratings keep the show going..
